Identity in Names

By Orlie Suverza Baek

The Korean ethnic minority group in Japan, also known as Zainichi Koreans, come from the descendants of Koreans who were forced to come to Japan during Japan’s colonial rule from 1910-1945. The narration on the history of the Zainichi Korean community is very linear and concise leaving the individual’s complex journey on their identity out. Through this project, looking at the relationship between names and the individual can provide a better understanding of the fluidity and complexity identity has within the Zainichi Korean community.
